A “Green” Orange Smoothie

Ideally we should have our ‘greens’ separately from our fruits but that’s not always practical. Here’s a smoothie to combine everything into one complete meal.

A “GREEN” ORANGE SMOOTHIE

In a high speed blender (I use a VitaMix) add

  • 4 or 5 pitted dates
  • half a vanilla bean or alcohol-free vanilla
  • about 1/2 cup of pecans
  • 1 or 2 oranges
  • 1 Tablespoon of ‘greens’
  • and about a cup of ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup of water.

Blend until smooth and enjoy!
It’s a great breakfast – keeps me full for hours and it’s loaded with antioxidants.

A snack on the run

Do you have difficulty finding quick healthy snacks? Here’s one you can make up ahead of time those those times your schedule just doesn’t accommodate  taking time to cook.

1 package of extra firm Tofu – drained, cut into 1/2 inch cubes

1/3 c low-sodium soy sauce or Braggs
1/3 c lime juice
3 Tblsp sesame oil

Mix these 3 ingredients together and marinate the tofu 1-4 hours. Place tofu on a baking sheet so the cubes aren’t touching and roast for about 20 minutes, turning once, until golden brown.

This makes a great snack – it’s low in calories, high in protein. Add some veggies and you’ve got a meal on the run.

Are You Eating Your Veggies?

There is so much research on the benefits of eating vegetables and fruits. But it seems that for so many people, even knowing that, they continue to struggle to get that nourishment their body so badly needs, especially in today’s world. We are constantly bombarded  with ‘free radicals’ and in order to combat the damage they do to our bodies, we need those fruits and vegetables more than ever.

For many people, taking ‘greens’ has become a great solution. There are, of course, many different ‘greens’ available, some better than others.  I am familiar with 2 of the many available. Those are ShenTrition and Greens First.

First of all, they both taste good and they’re not grainy. That has been a problem for ‘greens’ in the past.

The Greens First has a clean slightly mint taste. It contains probiotics as well as a comprehensive blend of fruits and vegetables plus it also has tumeric (curcumin) which has had extensive research on the benefits it provides. It contains spirulina and probiotics.

ShenTrition contains a wide variety of greens, including spirolina. In addition it has Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, Astragalus, American Ginseng and Cordyceps, to name a few of the ingredients designed to help your body build its immunity and increase energy.

I have no affiliation with either of these products. However, I believe that they are both excellent products and that depending on what you are trying to accomplish they both have benefits. At the least, compare these products with the ‘greens’ you’re taking to see where yours stacks up.

Remember, eating power-packed fruits and vegetables will help you increase and maintain that energy level we all desire so much.

8 Ways to Keep Your Energy Level Up

We all know what we need to do to stay healthy. It’s remembering to do it that gets difficult. How many times during the day do you stop to take a deep cleansing breath? Probably not often, if ever. So first, stop and take some time to breathe, breathe deeply. You’ll be amazed at how much it does for your energy level. And at the same time it’s improving many functions in your body.

So here are 8 things you can do EVERY day to help with your energy:

  1. Drink eight glasses of water a day.
  2. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. If you can’t do both – make sure you get up at the same time everyday.
  3. Eat five to six smaller meals a day – make sure to keep them balanced – complex carbs and protein are important
  4. Eat your carbohydrates earlier during the day.
  5. Avoid sugary sweets like candy bars, donuts, etc. – it may feel like they give you a boost in energy but you’ll crash when they wear off.
  6. Limit the amount of caffeine you drink and don’t drink it late in the day.
  7. Exercise for 15+ minutes a day-walk…run…jog….swim….bike – Just be sure to move!
  8. Remember to laugh – it does many things for you and is an important component of staying healthy and energetic.

Nothing earth-shattering but we all need reminders.

Need a Mid-Day Pick-Me-Up?

There are many reasons that we get the “mid-day” slump. Perhaps it was a poor night’s sleep or a skipped breakfast, stress at work or home. The list goes one. But we’ve probably all experienced it at least once and for some people it’s a daily occurrence.

Start your day with a high protein breakfast such as eggs. If you don’t have the time to sit down for breakfast, get in the habit of making a smoothie and add some protein powder or walnuts (if you have a blender that will grind them into powder). Then you can drink it as you’re getting ready for the day.

If possible go for a walk or do some form of exercise in the morning. Even if it’s just for 20 minutes, it’s a good way to get your day started.

Then instead of eating a huge, carb-laden lunch, have 3 snacks throughout the day comprised of protein and carbs. A couple of easy ones to fix in the morning (while you’re having your smoothie) are carrots wrapped with turkey breast or celery with peanut butter. These are easily made up ahead of time and taken with you to work. Nuts are always good – almonds or walnuts for instance. Seeds like pumpkins seeds give you lots of good nutrition also. Just don’t go overboard or you’ll start putting on the pounds.

Be sure and drink plenty of water and with light snacks throughout the day keep your energy level more balanced and the mid-day slump could become just a memory!
